The Derweze area is rich in natural gas. While drilling in 1971, Soviet geologists tapped into a cavern filled with natural gas. The ground beneath the drilling rig collapsed, leaving a large hole with a diameter of 70 metres (230 ft) and while geologists had hoped the fire would consume the fuel in a few days, the gas is still burning nearly fifty years later. 

Locals have named the crater the "Door to Hell".

    Hoje assisti a um filme chamado REPOMAN - O Resgate de órgãos ou REPOSSESSION. Esse filme é de 2010 e engraçado como já fazem 4 anos, alguém me disse que precisava assistir a esse filme.... Independente das críticas positivas ou negativas, da trama um tanto previsível, e da falto de alguns artifícios hollywoodianos típicos, o que mais me chamou atenção e me fez não parar de pensar nesse filme (até o ponto de escrever esse blog depois de tanto tempo... :) é o fato da FRAGILIDADE HUMANA!  Como somos frágeis!
