His first encounter with the  Spray , a 36ft 9in oyster fishing vessel, was as she lay high and dry in a field by New Bedford Harbour. She was a gift from a retired whaler, and it was said that the sight of the sloop, whose sailing days, like Slocum’s, seemed done for, stirred him deeply.
