John H. Patterson and the Sales Strategy of the National Cash Register Company, 1884 to 1922 by Walter A. Friedman John H. Patterson's sales management techniques built National Cash Register into the dominant force in its industry and had a major impact on the development of modern selling. This excerpt from Business History Review looks at one aspect of the Patterson method. John H. Patterson created an intricate system of management to monitor and train company salesman. He gave them scripts to memorize and assigned them territory to cover. He held conventions and thematic sales contests, and pressured salesmen to rid their regions of competition. Patterson sought to create a method of sales management that encompassed all aspects of selling, from the calculation of quotas and commission rates to the motivation of discouraged salesmen. This excerpt looks at one aspect of the Patterson method: the N.C.R. Pri...
Meu melhor amigo. Confiança total. Tudo acordado, fluindo.

The Organ and the Emperor: On Immortality, Power, and the Price of a Human Life By Ivan Carlos Possamai --- Prologue: The Whisper That Wasn’t Meant for Us It was one of those moments history loves to hide in plain sight. Two men — leaders of vast nations, architects of their own political immortality — strolling side by side in Beijing’s September sun. Cameras rolled, flags waved, soldiers marched in perfect synchrony. And then, a slip. A microphone, still live, caught words that were never meant for the public ear. “With the development of biotechnology, human organs can be continuously transplanted and people can live younger and younger, and even achieve immortality,” said Vladimir Putin. Xi Jinping replied, “Predictions are, this century, there is also a chance of living to 150.” It was casual, almost playful. But the air around those words was heavy. Because when the powerful speak of immortality, they are rarely talking about poetry or legacy. They are talking about staying...
The Most Important Life Lesson From Andy Dufresne and The Shawshank Redemption Gen Cruz Stephen King is one of the most prolific novelists of our time. One among his finest works is a novella titled Rita Hayworth and the Shawshank Redemption. It is hailed as the greatest film to never win an Oscar best picture award, and regarded as one of the greatest films in history. The novella is about a dispassionate big-shot banker serving life imprisonment in Shawshank Penitentiary, and his seemingly miraculous escape. The Story Andy Dufresne was judged guilty for the murder of his wife and her lover, a crime that at first seemed to the reader a cut and dry case. However, Andy was explicitly revealed to be innocent later on. Despite of this, Andy retained his stoic demeanor. He was angry for his predicament sure, but his feelings dictated neither his actions nor his attitu...

Advice is worthless, except when it’s not One of my mentors once gave me a piece of advice on advice (meta-advice. Metavice™.): “My job is to give you lots of advice. Your job is to ignore 95% of it.” I sat there for a moment, deciding whether or not to point out that he had just given me advice, and if I should ignore 95% of advice, I should probably ignore what he just said. Or something. I decided not to bring it up. Instead, I asked the obvious question: “How do I decide between what’s in the 95% and what’s in the 5%?” If you’re doing something interesting, it’s probably really hard. To pull it off, you want to learn from others’ mistakes, and that means getting lots of advice and input. However, you’re probably trying to do something that’s never been done before, and that means ignoring precedent, breaking glass and trying what others have failed to do. Most of all: even smart, well-intended people love pontificating on things they know nothing about. So...
Welcome to Gibtown, the last 'freakshow' town in America With the demise of the carnival, an important slice of American history risks being lost – but the residents of Gibsonton, Florida, are trying to keep the legacy of the town’s famous ‘freaks’ alive Ward Hall, 84. He has been in the sideshow business for 70 years. Guardian Kim Wall and Caterina Clerici in Gibsonton, Florida Thu 26 Feb 2015 09.15 EST 30 F or those who didn’t quite fit elsewhere, Gibtown was a utopia. Its first settlers, the Giant, and his wife, the Half-Woman, ran a campsite, a bakeshop and the fire department. The post office catered to little people with extra-low counters, and the beer hall had custom-built chairs for the Fat Ladies and the Tallest Man. Special zoning regulations allowed residents to keep and train exotic animals in their gardens. Siamese-twin sisters ran a fruit stand. Three factories manufactured Ferris wheels and carousels. Or at least that’s how Ward Hall, aka the King...
