Neste momento, em uma região montanhosa e remota no sudoeste da China, encontram-se em curso os últimos passos da construção da maior antena do mundo, para captar sinais de vida extraterrestre. O telescópio FAST terá um disco de recepção de 500 metros concebido para captar sinais de rádio emitidos a milhões de anos-luz da Terra.
Trata-se de um dos elementos simbólicos mais avançados do programa científico e espacial do país asiático e que foi construído em tempo recorde, pois começou a ser erguido em 2011 —e o Governo planeja tê-lo pronto em setembro deste ano. Para garantir que o FAST não sofra problemas de interferência, o país irá desalojar 9.000 habitantes da província de Guizhou, segundo informou a agênciaXinhua, citada pelo jornal britânico The Guardian. Todas as pessoas que viviam em um raio de cinco quilômetros de Dawodang serão desalojadas e receberão do Governo uma indenização equivalente a cerca de 1.800 euros (pouco mais de 8.000 reais).

A gigantesca instalação foi inspirada no Arecibo, o maior radiotelescópio do mundo, que está em operação em Porto Rico e é conhecido por ter aparecido em filmes como Contact, sobre uma comunicação de alienígenas com a Terra. O FAST terá uma sensibilidade no mínimo duas vezes maior e será entre cinco e dez vezes mais rápido do que o seu antecessor, segundo a página do projeto na Internet.
Um dos objetivos científicos declarados do novo telescópio é a busca por inteligência extraterrestre, ou SETI (em inglês), com uma potência bem maior do que a de qualquer outra antena já utilizada até hoje. Os responsáveis pelo projeto calculam que o FAST poderá observar um milhão de estrelas e os planetas à sua volta em busca de sinais de civilizações avançadas. O instrumento tinha, em 2011, um custo estimando em 100 milhões de euros (cerca de 450 milhões de reais).
O astrônomo Nan Rendong, chefe científico do projeto, confirma que o instrumento deve começar a ser operado em setembro deste ano. O FAST “será semelhante a outros radiotelescópios, e procurará possíveis comunicações alienígenas, sobretudo na faixa de 18 a 21 centímetros”, explica ele ao EL PAÍS. O projeto irá monitorar o espaço em torno de estrelas semelhantes ao Sol e exoplanetas rochosos descobertos até hoje. “Espera-se que o FAST capte sinais mais distantes do que todos os outros instrumentos. Essa distância depende não só do poder do nosso disco, mas também do poder dos discos dos alienígenas”, afirma. “Pessoalmente, eu me questiono sobre a natureza de outras civilizações e sobre quanto elas podem durar”, diz o cientista.
À procura de homenzinhos verdes
A busca de sinais de rádio de civilizações avançadas tem sido feita desde os anos 1970. Supõe-se que os sinais que o nosso planeta vem retransmitindo desde aSegunda Guerra Mundial tenham chegado a vários milhares de sistemas estelares, mas, por enquanto, todos os indícios de homenzinhos verdes captados por telescópios terrestres se mostraram falsos.
Muitos dos telescópios que buscam captar esses sinais precisam estar isolados de estações repetidoras de televisão, telefonia móvel e até mesmo sinais sem fio de WiFi. A China trabalha nesse projeto desde 1994. Quatrocentas depressões geográficas foram analisadas antes de se chegar à de Dawodang, uma área montanhosa de onde o projeto previa deslocar cerca de um milhão de metros cúbicos de terra.

A sigla FAST significa “telescópio esférico com abertura de 500 metros” em inglês. A base de rocha cárstica onde ele será afixado está sendo preenchida com 4.000 painéis triangulares que funcionarão como uma grande antena.
Além de sinais extraterrestres, há outros objetivos, como uma catalogação da distribuição de hidrogênio atômico neutro no universo, a busca de matéria escura e energia escura e a detecção e observação de pulsares. Em Arecibo, observações desse último tipo tornaram possível a obtenção da primeira prova indireta das ondas gravitacionais, em 1978, pela qual Rusell Hulse e Joseph Taylor receberam o Prêmio Nobel de Física em 1993.
“É um projeto impressionante”, avalia Jesús Martín Pintado, coordenador do grupo de Astronomia da Rede de Infraestruturas de Astronomia (RIA), da Espanha. “É como um banco de testes com o qual a China desenvolve a sua própria tecnologia de detectores e antenas de grandes dimensões”, explica.
O próximo passo será desenvolver detectores ainda mais precisos e avançados, como aqueles que estarão no megaprojeto SKA. Trata-se, nesse caso, de uma rede de telescópios de rádio que será espalhada entre a África e a Austrália e que constituirá uma área de recepção de um quilômetro quadrado, de longe a maior do mundo. A China é um dos países integrantes do projeto, que implicará na construção da maior infraestrutura científica do planeta e que começará a funcionar em 2020. Quem sabe, até lá, Pequim já não terá em seu poder o primeiro sinal de rádio extraterrestre.
UMA ANTENA PARA EMITIR SINAIS CIFRADOS
O grande trunfo de Arecibo enquanto maior radiotelescópio do mundo não é tanto o diâmetro de 300 metros, mas a antena emissora que fica ao lado. Esse equipamento permite que se enviem sinais poderosos de rádio para diferentes corpos e que se estudem as suas ondas quando retornam. “Em algumas apresentações do projeto FAST em congressos internacionais, foi dito que se pretendia instalar uma antena emissora como essa com o objetivo de fazer uma cartografia da Lua, embora não esteja claro se o fizeram e se possuem a tecnologia necessária para isso”, explica Rafael Rodrigo, ex-diretor do CSIC e radioastrônomo do Instituto Internacional de Ciências Espaciais, na Suíça.
Esse tipo de antena emissora também permite definir asteroides e outros corpos celestes. Em 1974, o telescópio de Arecibo enviou, com esse tipo de dispositivo, uma das mensagens mais emblemáticas da busca por uma inteligência extraterrestre. Ela foi redigida por Francis Drake, pioneiro do SETI, Carl Sagan e outros especialistas e continha a figura de um homem, o DNA e as bases bioquímicas da vida, entre outros conceitos. Era mais uma demonstração tecnológica do que uma tentativa de contatar extraterrestres, já que a emissão levará cerca de 21.000 anos para chegar ao seu destino no cúmulo de Hércules.
