The Best Book of All Times... A la recherche de temps perdu, Marcel Proust's - In Search of Lost Time

In Search of Lost Time by Marcel Proust

Swann's Way, the first part of A la recherche de temps perdu, Marcel Proust's seven-part cycle, was published in 1913. In it, Proust introduces the themes that run through the entire work. The narrator recalls his childhood, aided by the famous madeleine; and describes M. Swann's passion for Odette. The work is incomparable. Edmund Wilson said "[Proust] has supplied for the first time in literature an equivalent in the full scale for the new theory of modern physics."

Valentin Louis Georges Eugène Marcel Proust was a French novelist, critic, and essayist who wrote the monumental novel In Search of Lost Time, originally published in French in seven volumes between 1913 and 1927. He is considered by critics and writers to be one of the most influential authors of the 20th century.

Famous Quotes:

* If a little dreaming is dangerous, the cure for it is not to dream less but to dream more, to dream all the time.

* The charms of the passing woman are generally in direct proportion to the swiftness of her passing.

* Time passes, and little by little everything that we have spoken in falsehood becomes true.

* We do not succeed in changing things according to our desire, but gradually our desire changes.

* A woman one loves rarely suffices for all our needs, so we deceive her with another whom we do not love.

* Illness is the doctor to whom we pay most heed; to kindness, to knowledge we make promise only; pain we obey.

* We are able to find everything in our memory, which is like a dispensary or chemical laboratory in which chance steers our hand sometimes to a soothing drug and sometimes to a dangerous poison.

* A change in the weather is sufficient to recreate the world and ourselves.

My favorite:

To write that essential book, a great writer does not need to invent it but merely to translate it, since it already exists in each one of us. The duty and task of a writer are those of translator.
